Wrytling privacy policy
Last updated 29 October 2026 (email sign-in added)
Wrytling is a writing tracker made by The Author’s Bestiary Ltd, a company in Scotland (“we”). This policy covers the Wrytling website at wrytling.com, the Windows app and the Android app. The short version: you don’t need an account (signing in with your email is optional), there are no ads and no tracking of you, and your manuscripts never leave your device. We only count how many copies of Wrytling are in use, anonymously.
What stays on your device
Your books, word counts, creatures, badges and settings are saved on your own device (in your browser’s storage, or in the app’s own data folder). You don’t need to give us your name or email address to use Wrytling. If you link a manuscript file so Wrytling can count its words, the file is read on your device only and is never uploaded.
Sync (optional)
If you turn on Sync, Wrytling sends your writing data to our sync server so your other devices can share it: book titles, word targets and deadlines, the words you add each day with their times, your creatures’ names and looks, badges and settings needed for these. It is linked only to a random sync key (like WRYT-K7QM-2XPA-…), not to your name or email. We store a one-way fingerprint of the key, not the key itself. The server runs on Cloudflare, and data travels encrypted (HTTPS).
You can turn Sync off on any device at any time. To delete your synced data from our server, see “Deleting your account” below.
Signing in with email (optional)
If you choose to sign in with your email, we keep your email address with your sync account, so you can sign in on a new device with a code we email you. The codes are sent through Sender (our email service). We use your email only for signing in, and never for marketing unless you tick the box to also get the Author’s Bestiary newsletter, which then asks you to confirm and which you can leave at any time.
You can remove your email in the app (Settings → Sync across devices → Remove my email) while keeping Sync.
Deleting your account
In the app, choose Settings → Sync across devices → Delete my account, or use wrytling.com/delete. This deletes everything we store for you straight away: synced writing data, your email address and your licence link. The copies on your own devices stay there.
Wrytling Unlimited licence keys
Wrytling Unlimited is bought through Payhip, which handles the payment under its own privacy policy. When you enter your licence key, we check it with Payhip and remember it against your sync account as a one-way fingerprint. So that entering the key on a new device can link it to your account, we also keep your sync key encrypted with your licence key, which only someone holding the licence key can unlock.
Counting how many people use Wrytling
So we know how many people Wrytling helps, each copy of the app sends us one tiny anonymous message a day when it’s opened: a random number made only for this count, which kind of device it is (website, Windows, Android or iPhone) and the Wrytling version. It contains nothing about you or your writing, isn’t linked to your sync key, and we don’t store your IP address with it.
The website also uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page visits without cookies and without identifying or following visitors.
Help & feedback
If you send a message with Help & feedback, we receive your message, your email address if you choose to give it, and (if you leave the box ticked) basic technical details: the Wrytling version, your browser or device type, screen size, how many books you track and whether Sync and Unlimited are on. We use this only to reply and to fix problems. Messages are stored privately by our feedback service and emailed to us.
Other services Wrytling uses
- Google Fonts (website): the fonts load from Google, which sees your IP address when they do.
- GitHub (Windows app): to check for and download updates, the app asks GitHub for the latest version.
- Reminders (Android): reminder notifications are scheduled on your phone; nothing is sent to us.
Apart from the anonymous counts above, we don’t use analytics, advertising, tracking cookies or any kind of profiling, and we never sell or share your data.
Children
Wrytling is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see, correct or delete the data we hold about you, or object to how we use it. The easiest way for us to find your data is your sign-in email, your sync key (for synced data) or the email address you gave with feedback. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
